My own personal favorites

I've been writing poems since second grade, but didn't really begin to think of myself as a poet until a span of a couple years where I found myself cranking out a poem a week. Sending new friends to a collection of couple hundred poems is rather intimidating. Worse, all my poems are here, the good ones and the bad ones. (Though I'm never quite sure which is which.

So here is a short list of "must see" works together with a bit of introduction or explanation of why the poem is important to me.

The Shaman's Lament
1 January 2000

A cute poem about my spiritual experience at the beginning of the new millenium. I always find myself telling people to read this one first.

A Walk on the Beach
20 July 2001

My favorite demonstration of how I can turn an experience into words.

Cultivating Serenity
27 August 2004

Poetry helps me explore my feelings, and seek out answers. When I feel I've found a useful and important insight, I sometimes write a "self-help" poem to try and help others get that insight. This is my favorite self-help poem.

Blue Denim Boy
28 September 2003

One of many poems about how subtle aspects of how someone looks can excite me.

Accidental Tryst
22 July 2002

A serious poem about how paranoid I get after sleeping with someone for the first time.

Solace in a Cup of Tea
25 August 2001

Tea is a magical beverage. It really can help you bring you back to yourself.

22 Year Olds of All Ages
7 July 2000

A poem cum personals ad. I think it rings true even years later.

The Top Ten Things
Twinkies Cannot be Trusted With

23 November 1995

Here I transform anger at someone's callous attitude into a poem cum top-ten-list.

At the Disco
23 March 1996

Both in speech and in poetry, I sometimes take snippets from things I've heard and smoosh them together into sentences that use reference to the whole work to imply much in few words.
Now a doubly favorite poem since my friend Myke Weiskopf put it to music.

Manners
24 Feb 2000

A comedic collaboration. A particular favorite now that Myke Weiskopf put it to music.

The Story of B.
22 January 2000
14 February 2000 (revised)

A very long poem about a very short but life-changing relationship. I suspect this one will always remain my most favorite. I wrote it to process my feelings about that relationship, and ended up much better able to comfortably be myself. Afterwards I discovered I had a lot of poetry inside of me.
